چکیده

Light regimes vary significantly within small forest openings, rangingfrom full sunlight to total shade, and they may affect the establishment and early growth of oak seedlings. We designed modified shadehouses to simulate the complex light conditions within forest openings and tested the effects of daily photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), time of direct light exposure, and the ratio of direct light to day length (direct-sunlight ratio) on height, diameter, and periodic growth of cherrybark oak (Quercus pagoda Raf.) seedlings through 2 yr. Five treatments representing the time of exposure todirect sunlightwerecreated: NO, NOON, MORNING, AFTERNOON, and FULL. Treatments significantly affected both the height and root-collar diameter of seedlings, especially during the second growing season. The direct-sunlight ratio was linearly related to periodic height growth forthe NOON treatment but not related to height growth for the other treatments. However, periodic height growth in the AFTERNOON and FULL treatments was highly correlated to mean daily PAR. Maximum periodic height growth occurred at moderate daily PAR levels. This research showed that light conditionsfor maximum growth of cherrybark oak seedlings change through time, with adequate shading being most favorable during the early stages of establishment. FOR. Growth and biomass distribution of cherrybark oak (Quercus pagoda Raf.) seedlings as influenced by light availability

Cherrybark oak (Quercrrs pagoda Raf.) seedlings were established and raised in the field under four light levels (100%. 53%. 27% or 8% of full sunlight) to study the effects of light availability on their shoot growth, biomass accumulation, and biomass distribution. After two growing seasons, greatest stem growth was observed on seedlings which received intermediate light levels, and this growt...

Comparative Gas - Exchange in Leaves ofIntact and Clipped , Natural and Planted Cherrybark Oak ( Quercus pagoda Raf . ) Seedlings

Gas-exchange measurements, including CO2-exchange rate (net photosynthesis), stomatal conductance, and transpiration, were conducted on intact and clipped cherrybark oak (Quercus pagoda Raf.) seedlings growing in the field and in a nursery bed. Seedlings inthe field, released from midstory and understory woody competition, showed significant increases in gas-exchange compared to non-released se...

Photosynthetic Light Response of Bottomland Oak Seedlings Raised under Partial Sunlight

Seedlings of cherrybark oak (Quercus pagoda Rafinesque), Nuttall oak (Quercus nuttallii Palmer) and overcup oak (Quercus lyrata Walter) were grown under two light levels, partial (20 percent) or full sunlight, to study physiological acclimation of leaves to low light availability. Shifts in leaf morphology were noted for seedlings raised beneath partial sunlight, and photosynthetic light respon...

Prediction of Leaf Area in Individual Leaves of Cherrybark Oak Seedlings ( Quercus pagoda Raf . )

The prediction of leaf area for cherrybark oak (eerm pagoda Raf.) seedlings is important for studying the physiology of the species. Linear and polynomial models involving leaf length, width, fresh weight, dry weight, and internodal length were tested independently and collectively to predict leaf area. Twenty-nine cherrybark oak seedlings were grown in a greenhouse for one growing season and a...

Response of Advance Cherrybark Oak Reproduction to Midstory Removal and Shoot Clipping

Midstoty competition control c nd shoot clipping have been proposed to increase the vigor and height of advance bottomland oak reproduction. Results from a study in east-central Mississippi showed that advance cherrybark oak (Quercus pagoda Raf) releasedfrom midstory competition had greater survival than nonreleased seedlings, 64% and 48%, respectively, 9 yr after treatment. Released seedlings ...
